Class Policies and Procedures

Here is some information on how the way our room works.

Weekly Letter

I will send home an informational letter every week this year, please look for it on the first day of each school week. The Weekly Letter is the primary source of information on our activities in class. Summaries of subject area activities, homework assignments, spelling words, and class project information will be included. If you need additional information or have any questions, you can contact me at Al.Rumsch@pac.dodea.edu

Rules, Rewards, and Consequences

It is expected that the students' behavior in the room will be such that all students can participate in the learning, and that the teacher is not hindered from teaching. I expect students to listen quietly while others speak. I expect students to do what they have been told to do by adults. And I expect students work independently without disturbing others. A conscientious effort should be made to complete assignments thoughtfully and carefully.
Each student shares in the responsibilities of maintaining a neat and orderly room by working with a team. I will award points to each team periodically throughout the day for having an orderly table, attentive participation to lessons, and prompt following of directions. The group with the most points will receive extra classroom privileges such as an extended recess or class free time.
The class will earn rewards for good behavior on a regular basis. Good reports from specialists and compliments from other teachers and staff will be tallied, and a class party will be held when we have achieved the goal of a set number.
Individual students who misbehave will be corrected orally, and then disciplined with a loss of recess or other privilege. If a student's misbehavior persists, I will contact you by phone, e-mail, or letter to discuss the situation. If these interventions are not successful, we will arrange after school detention in my room.

Supplies

Please help your child keep these supplies replenished throughout the year:

  • Glue Stick
  • School Box for supplies (not larger than 9")
  • Large pink/red eraser
  • Pencils with erasers
  • Pocket Folders
  • Scissors
  • Crayons
  • Mead Composition Book
  • Elmer's Glue
  • Colored Pencils
  • Markers
  • Box of Tissue

Supplies should be marked with your child's name. Students should avoid bringing large quantities of consumables such as pencils and paper on one time. Please check with your child regularly to make sure the supplies have not run out.

Grading

Students' work demonstrates both understanding of the material, and the care and thoughtfulness that has been put into completion of the assignment. Our Report Card notes whether students consistently display a skill, are developing or progressing towards acquisition of the skill, or that the skill is not yet evident.

Regular, daily assignments will be graded with a plus mark if the work demonstrates understanding of the concept involved and good care in the completion of the assignment. A check mark will be given if the work demonstrates a partial understanding of the concept and that some care was taken in completing the assignment. Work that demonstrates a need for further instruction or that evidences little or no care taken in its completion will be marked with an explanatory note.

Some projects require that have required extensive work will be graded using a rubric such as this:

  • Great - task is fully accomplished and the work is thoughtful, neat and complete.
  • OK- task is partially accomplished but more thought and care could have been used. The work does not meet neatness expectations.
  • Needs Work- task is attempted but is incomplete and demonstrates vague or fragmented understanding of the material. Little or no care or thought has not been taken in the completion of the assignment.

Please look for a Progress Report every two weeks.

Homework Policy

Students in Second Grade should set aside about 40 minutes per night for homework. Part of this time will be used for reading "Book Bag" books. It is expected that parents will work with their children to complete assignments. Homework will be noted in the Weekly Letter and posted on the class website. Students will be assigned the following homework on a regular basis:

  • Monday - "Book Bag", spelling sentences
  • Tuesday - "Book Bag", math practice activity
  • Wednesday - "Book Bag"
  • Thursday - "Book Bag", writing assignment

You will find specific information for each assignment in the Take Home Folder on the day that the assignment is made. Assignments should be returned in the Take Home folder every day.

Class Routines

The continuity of class routines contributes to student success:

Personal Boxes - Each child will be assigned a box for keeping their materials and supplies. These boxes should be kept neat and clean.
Tables - Each student will be assigned a space at a table. There will be a common container for supplies at the table that will need to be kept orderly.
Work Folder - Students will put all their work each day into a folder and put it in a box on the table.
Take Home Folder - Students will take home a folder each day with homework assignments and notes. It needs to be brought back to school so that it can be checked each morning.
"Book Bag" - Each student will be given a ziploc bag of books selected by the teacher. The student should read from the bag every night. It is expected that the book will be read several times to achieve fluency.
Morning Routines - Students are expected to participate in morning activities that include the pledge, singing and Big Book story reading.
End of Day Routines - Students will present their task sheets for checking each day. Students will not be dismissed until the tables are in order.
Snack and Lunches - Students should bring a healthy snack for break time each day in A small fabric bag or lunch box to keep at their desk. Chips, cookies and soda pop should not be brought as snacks.

Thank you very much for your support!
