Below are pictures of the 17.5 acres
we need to purchase from the timber company.
Many of these pictures are close to our house, garden, well.
At the bottom of this page are pictures of nearby clearcuts what these lands could look like if we do nothing.

A leaning Douglas fir and three Incense cedars in the background.

Our spring box and water pipe can be seen in this picture.
This water source for Rainbow's End was never on our land, but it is in the land we want to buy.

Above: Just built this spring -- a new wildlife home!

Above: Tree on left is the only old-growth conifer in the land we want to buy.
It is a Douglas fir that is about 300 years old.
The tree on the right is a Douglas fir that is about 80 years old.
However, there are many old growth hardwoods, like oak and madrones.

One of the old-growth oak trees on far right. It could be 300 years old.
The conifers are known as "second growth" and are about 80 years old.
This acre will cost us more because the large conifers are valuable to Roseburg Forest Products.

Douglas fir in back, with Incense cedar in foreground.

Much of the 10 acres above Rainbow's End are oak woodlands, like above and below.

There are lots of pretty camping spots.

Another view of the 400 year old oak seen on the home page. Our current property (red flags) line can be seen between this oak, and the white house at Rainbow's End. This is how close the Timber Company land comes to our water-well and lives, and one of the reasons this 17 acre buffer is so important to us. Also, we want to save this ancient oak and other hardwoods that will be killed by Roseburg Forest Products, either this spring by "hack and squirt" herbicide application to their roots (to make sure they won't re-sprout), or by aerial spraying after the clearcut in 5-10 years. And, speaking about that future clearcut -- stay tuned... One vision is to convince RFP to leave some trees and then buy the entire 160 acres after they do their dirty deeds (or, buy it before terrible things happen if we are blessed).

Below: The timber companies sprayed their land above Rainbow's End last December, with some form of fertilizer. Their operations are so close to us, the helicopter turns around above our house (left) and bath house (right). While it is "only" fertilizer now, after they clearcut they will be spraying herbicides with helicopters, chemicals like 2,4,D. Because of heavy clouds, the clifs above our house (left) can't be seen. Because of the cliffs, we often have strong downslope winds in the evenings. It is entirely legal for timber companies to spray chemicals like this. Even if chemicals drift on the wind, it is difficult to prove it harms people. The timber companies sprays herbicides so that the growth of their commercial crop of trees is not slowed down by brush or hardwood trees that take away water and sunlight from the money making conifers.

Below is what clearcutting looks like near us:

Above and below are pictures of the same ridge above us, about a mile west. The entire ridge is being clearcut, so there is not much hope for the watershed above our lands, except if we can buy it in 5 years before it is clearcut -- or buy it right after it is clearcut and buy some trees to be saved before the clearcut. Purchase of the 17.5 acre buffer now will save the old-growth hardwoods from being killed this spring, and push the future clearcut and herbicide spraying 330 feet further away from our homes.

Below is a clearcut on a different ridge above houses. Note the landslide in the middle of the clearcut.

Below is a close-up of a clearcut and logging roads.
