I Often Enjoy Playing With Different Configurations Of Instruments And Players From My Album. It Inspires Me To Search For Different Ways To Tell My Stories.
-Emy Phelps
Singer and guitarist Emy Phelps has performed throughout the Northwest for many years. She was a founding member of the local Ashland Oregon band, Borderline. She has also shared the stage with Ricky Scaggs, Bruce Hornsby, The Nashville Bluegrass Band Duke McVinnie, Willis Alan Ramsey and The Sally Van Meter Band. Emy has also performed at the prestigious New Music America Festival in Philadelphia, The North BY Northwest Singer-Songwriters Festival, Wintergrass Bluegrass Festival, and several performances at the Northwest Folk Life Festival in Seattle.
She has been compared to Lyle Lovett, Gillian Welch, and Emmylou Harris for her American Roots eclectic style of song writing and vocal qualities. Her love of teaching and exploring music with children is exemplified in the great amount of time she dedicates to the Ashland Oregon Public School System. In the past few years, Emy has shifted her focus to writing and performing her own music.
I Was Born In Midway,Minnesota (mid-way between St.Paul and Minneapolis). Them North Country winters were taking their toll and my parents were looking for work near family so we moved to Ashland Oregon where I was raised. I started playing the guitar at the age of eleven, learning songs from church and my favorites out of a Mary Poppins song book I found.
I found an old Gibson J-45 in a pawn shop for 250 dollars and it was full of songs. I usually like writing with guitar though I do like having a piano nearby to work with. I just bought a Martin 00028 EC (Eric Clapton) Model which I really love. It is a great guitar.
My songs come from all the usual places, memories, novels, a single melody line, conversations, divine inspiration, my family and friends, a concept, a challenge, emotional baggage, observations of everyday living from individual to global happenings.
I am really pleased with my new album there are so many great musicians on it who really got what I was trying to say. They all really helped tell the stories. The recording process , taking songs from a sketch to a full and complete picture, is so great!
I love performing live and bringing the stories to people in a new fresh way so that they live a new life every night. The magic that can happen during a performance between all of the participants, musicians, audience, technicians lives on the razors edge and is a beautiful thing when it all works together. I think the most important thing I try to achieve is to give the audience an honest and perfect performance.
