October 3: Grayback Mountain (p. 160 in 100 Hikes) TH: Take Highway 238 from Jacksonville and cross the bridge just beyond the Applegate store. Left on Thompson Creek Road for 11.9 miles to pavement end and make a right on Road 1005. 4 miles on Road 1005 to the TH. Description: We did this one the hard way last year, bushwhacking up through the open meadow. This time we are going up the O'Brien Creek trail to the Boundary trail. We will follow the Boundary Trail around past Cold Spring to the saddle and then walk up the ridge to the summit for panoramic views from the Pacific Ocean near Crescent City, to Mt. Shasta, Mt McLoughlin and Crater Lake rim. Distance 6 miles. Elevation gain 2,500 feet. Weather Forecast. RT mileage 100 miles.
October 10: Mt Thielsen (near Diamond Lake) (p. 52 in 101 Hikes - Meet at 8:00 AM. TH: take Highways 62 and 230 toward Diamond Lake; turn left (towards Roseburg) on Hwy 138 and drive 1.4 miles to TH; EDT: 120 minutes. Description: Back by popular demand! Hike to the junction with the PCT, then return the same way; We can go a bit above the PCT junction if the group would like to see what the loose scree approach to the summit is like. October 17: PCT around the West Rim of Crater Lake - Meet at 8:00 AM TH: Drop a shuttle car at Rim Village. Continue around the lake to the PCT crossing at
North Junction. EDT: 2 hours.
Description: Follow the rerouted PCT around the West rim of Crater Lake back to Rim
Village. Bring your own lunch; the Lodge will be closed but the snack bar will be open.

October 24: Fourmile Lake to Long Lake (p.116 in 100 Hikes) TH: Take DIM to Highway 140. Turn left towards Medford. Between Mileposts 36 and 35 turn right on FS 3661 for 5.7 miles to the Fourmile Lake Campground. Park at the official trailhead turnaround point. EDT 60 minutes. Description: Enjoy a late fall walk along the lakes in the Sky Lakes Wilderness to a lunch spot on Long Lake. Good views of the lakes and Mt. McLoughlin. Distance 8 miles; climbing 700'. October 31:Taylor Lake (Russian Wilderness) (p. 204 in 100 Hikes) - Meet 8:00 AM TH: Take I-5 to Fort Jones exit (1 mi south of Yreka); follow Hwy 3 for 27 mi to Etna; make right on Collier Way and continue 10.4 mi to Etna Summit; Leave shuttle car. Continue on the paved road 2.5 miles to the Taylor Lake Parking Area. EDT: 90 min Description: Follow the trail along the east side of Taylor Lake. Head up to our usual lunch spot on the ridge. Then follow the PCT back along a view-packed ridge crest to Etna Summit. Distance: 5 mi.; elevation gain: 1,100 ft., half of which is the scramble up to the ridge from lake level. Weather Forecast.
