Beautiful day for a hike. Got lost on the way to the trailhead when we made a right onto FS 110 just after the turn from Thompson Creek Road to 1005. Should have gone straight but went up the hill instead. Wasted 30 minutes. Drive time, if you go directly, is about 90 minutes.
Hike looks easy; only a little over 4 miles. But it is up, up and up. About 2,500' of elevation delta in just a little over 2 miles. Trail to the Krause Cabin (which has been burned) and then up the meadow to the summit. Loose climbing and Manzanita as you get closer to the top.
The folks that did not go to the top went down the Boundary Trail which they liked and suggested that it was an easier way up but you do miss the two cabins.
Views on top are 360. Descent was easier than expected. Able to slip and slide down. Also staying closer to the trees seemed to offer better footing than the open meadow.
For 2012 we plan to take the trail to Cold Spring and then to follow the Boundary Trail to the saddle and then to walk up the ridge from there.
